Well, Five Points failed to strike last night. They all showed up in the south stairwell, but seeing that Catacombs was completely locked down, they left after we threw Lowen's clothes out a window. Rumor has it they were up fairly late trying to come up with some kind of response. All I have to say is: Bring it.
In other news, it seems that 5th North will be spending a significant portion of their day cleaning up the frosting they spread all over 4th North and Carter lobby. Cool.
Posted by ryan at December 12, 2003 12:05 PM | TrackBackMay I ask what exactly brought this on?
Posted by: steele at December 12, 2003 12:21 PMLowen has been a pusillanimous punk all year. Most specifically, he's sent embarassing emails to various girls from the accounts of Matt, Todd, and others, and been pretty much entirely unapologetic about it. He's been asking for it. And he got it. Frankly, I'd be surprised if Five Points can break out of space cadet mode long enough to pull off a coherent response.
Posted by: ryan at December 12, 2003 01:01 PMHey, remember when Catacombs tried to get back Sutherland and totally failed with Ellis, with the dead cat, AND with the trash can alarm? That was cool. I believe that the final score was Sutherland 3, Catacombs 0.
Posted by: Ben at December 12, 2003 01:12 PMHey, remember when one of the Sutherland guys rolled out of a second story porch in a trash can for a hall video, landed on the sidewalk, and went to the hospital? I believe the final score was Catacombs 0, Sutherland on injured reserve.
Posted by: mesh at December 12, 2003 02:34 PMWell, let's see. The Ellis thing was a bit of a fiasco, but that's more due to the fact that one Rodney Collins came out with a hockey stick. The dead cat was pretty much a success, as it made it on the hall and smelled worse than just about anything I've ever encountered. The trash can alarm was indeed disarmed quite quickly, but did manage to wake everyone up. I'd say the score is more like 1-1-1.
Posted by: ryan at December 12, 2003 02:55 PMActually, he rolled onto the grass, not the sidewalk. And he went on the DL, not the season-ending IR.
As for the dead cat, from what I remember, all attempts to prank the hall degenerated into a mere frustrated toss of the cat on to the hall while trying to dodge the tables that were propped up against the elevator door for just such an occasion. The others who attempted to come in through the hall doors were greeted by loud pan "alarms" falling off the doors and were immediately chased off by those of us sleeping on the hall.
Posted by: Ben at December 12, 2003 05:03 PMi for one am glad. hall rivalry always brings out the best of our creative powers.
Posted by: zach at December 12, 2003 08:29 PMas i sit and think of all the great pranks that Suckerland pulled....i cant come up with a single damn one. I can think of several lame ones... ones that girls halls might do. yeah. thats about it, and i think those get negative scores dont they? anywho... since ive been in louisville and involved with the greek system here. ive seen some pretty ballsy pranks. one fraternity house got repainted... another got more or less trashed...i believe in retaliation. One house had their electricity shut off for a day or two [that one was because an alumni helped out] things like that, that put "pranks" like throwing gross things on a hall to utter shame. to the Combs! I URGE THEE ON TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS!!!!!! Shut Suckerland up once and for all and let Covenant know what hall rules most supreme!
Posted by: Pnut at December 12, 2003 10:52 PMApparently Catacombian residents past and present are developing quite a pension for revisionist history. Can you possibly compare any fraternity at the University of Lousiville to Sutherland past? The answer is a loud and resounding no. Consider Dirty Work. Sutherland is like the less-attractive, looked-over tandem of Mitch and Sam. They might not be much to look at, but at the end of the day their ability to connive and seek revenge leads to a giant frat ass-whooping. All the neanderthal, polo-shirt-wearing Neil's and Troy's of the frat world simply can't tear themselves away from their homoerotic activity long enough to do anything more intelligent than whoop and holler and yell "YEAH! WAY TO GO! HELL YEAH!"
Posted by: Ben at December 15, 2003 10:09 AMOkay, "Nacho," that's enough. Leave off.
Posted by: ryan at December 15, 2003 03:52 PMOk, I was the guy who planned the dead cat prank, we even have it on video...somewhere. The idea was to mess with both the doors into sutherland to distract you guys while we knocked down the tables to chuck the cat while a buncha guys tossed the cat into the hall. We even gutted the cat in the elevator on the way up. I have a hard-time see why, from a planning standpoint, that wasn't a sucess. Now whether or not it harrassed Sutherland "enough" or whatever, well, that's up for discussion.
And further, as the oldest retard in this discussion, remembering when both Mr. Hardesty was but a freshman, I'd like to point out a few things.
Sutherland did about a 2 year run of "being cool." It was a decent run, and respectable to one extent or another. They became the premier hall in Mac and made a run at that position at Covenant as a whole.
But it's important to note that before or after those two years Sutherland wasn't/isn't anything. There isn't any continuity and there's been a complete lack of traditions passed down. And hey, this is just what you guys (sutherlanders) are saying. I remember Sutherland's before it attempted greatness, and it well, wasn't great.
But there's also an important distinction between the different of presence that Catacombs & Sutherland tries to exhibit (and since it's the context, when I refer to Sutherland I'm referring to it's two years of prominence).
Sutherland, to the best of my memory, seemed to be a pretty tight group of guys doing all sorts of Jackass like stuff and some other crazy things. I'm not going to analyze the level of actual community (such as intimacy, depth of frienships, spiritual interaction), that's something they've gotta judge.
Why I think Catacombs will be and is forever better than Sutherland even at their best is that Catacombs makes it a point to plan events/skits/pranks that are to one extent or another "gifts" to the campus, such as The Folk Festival & Chapel Lawn extravaganzas. What other hall has traditions like that which provide humor & entertainment for the rest of campus as opposed to just themselves and their video camera?
These things are why even now you can go down to Catacombs and see traditions and icons a decade old and/or more. Heck, even this year they picked a hall t-shirt design that was from nearly 25 years ago. Professors such as Morton, Morris, and Petcher lived on Catacombs. We have second generation Catacombians. 4 brothers, and on and on and on.
Sutherland may be great one day, but that takes a great deal and time and the effort of years upon years. Right now I think it's a non-issue. It's like your little kid brother stealing your tennis shoes and then declaring victory. It's just kinda juvenile & silly. Much like 90% of sutherland's activities anyways; if the videos speak any truth.
Posted by: JosiahQ at December 16, 2003 08:29 AMSutherland had, oh, I guess about 3 good years. For a hall that's only existed for 6 years, that's not too bad. Catacombs, on the other hand, has existed for decades, and as a result has many more long-standing traditions. Lots of halls have abandoned traditions and become "wakerfied." Blackwatch comes to mind.
I was really only referring to 1 or 2 years, not the long-term total existence of the halls. I belive that for 1 year, Sutherland truly was the hall to be on campus. We had the Stay-awake-athon, UEW, awesome hall t-shirts (which, by the way, we wore for an entire semester straight), an incredible Rymer Cup victory, lots of hall sports (played on the hall) and so on and so forth. Of course Catacombs has a richer tradition and has enjoyed many more fruitful years "at the top" so to speak.
Looking back, what we really had on Sutherland was a group of guys who were very close, and, upon graduating, have remained close. Over the years, Catacombs has sustained exactly this unity probably better than any other hall at Covenant. Only time will tell if Sutherland will be the same.
Posted by: Ben at December 16, 2003 09:55 AMA view from the outside: Catacombs has really gotton on my nerves at times. For instance, my underwear being in Mesh's room for an entire day is something I will never not be bitter about (or proud that I can say it happened to me, but I like to ignore that part). That and I have yet to be able to get one of there t-shirts... the thing is, Catacombs is the real deal. Like them, hate them, copy them, prank them, they will always be them. I hope that the traditions carry on long enough so that some day *tears up* if I have a son, he can join your order. Rock on!
Posted by: nats at December 17, 2003 10:08 PMOkay, "Nacho," you're done now. I asked you to stop. You didn't. You are insulting me on a webpage of my creation, and charge me of cowardice while hiding behind pseudonyms and gibberish email addresses. Well, let't just see what we know about "Nacho". We know that "Nacho" is a Covenant student. We know this because his first two posts were from Covenant IP addresses, and we check our logs. Another thing we know is that when at home, "Nacho" uses AOL dialup, and does so from an IP range in eastern Virginia. That narrows things down a good bit. All I have to do is stop in at Student Development and have them give Tech Services permission to do a thorough scan of their extensive logs and I'll know exactly who you are.
Now "Nacho," I'm content to leave things as they are. You are, as has been seen, an immature and cowardly troll who likes to launch anonymous insults. I am okay with this. The Internet is full of your ilk. But this is my space. If you post here once more in the fashion with which you have been conducting youself, all I have to say is "Grab your ankles."
Posted by: ryan at December 23, 2003 11:11 PMAs I have said before, don't sing it, bring it.
