Derivative pop

You know how a lot of current pop music sounds manufactured and, well, all the same? Well, this just takes the cake.

Hit the link (3.86MB mp3, modem users beware) and see if you can identify the songs.

Left channel: "The Scientist" by Coldplay.

Right channel: "Pieces" by Sum41.

Can we say all say formulaic?

Awesome! Except...I've had enough of derivatives for today.

f(x) = x^n

dy/dx = nx^(n-1)

Two bands who should be shot on sight. Why couldn't a Covenant grad have assassinated someone who deserved it?

was this example really needed to convince you that pop music formulaic?

Ryan,

Sum 41 started playing this song on Leno the other night and I started immedietely singing the Coldplay song right over it. I can't listen cause this computer doesn't have speakers, does this mean that they are even in the same key and form?

Same key, same chord progression, same transitions, same length, same everything.

Amazing. You need to read Chuck Klosterman on Coldplay (in his book "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs," a delightful read.) He hates them. I mean, such loathing as has never been seen. It's hilarious.

Ditto on Klosterman's 'SD&CP'. Tyler Grisham had it, and read the better part of it in one day, mostly out loud to me. It's fantastic.
