Is there any reason this wouldn't work?

Various parties are suggesting the construction of a 2000 mile fence/barrier along the US-Mexico border as a solution to the problem of illegal immigration.

Can anyone think of a reason why this wouldn't work? I'm not asking if it's a good idea, just a simple prediction as to whether or not this would reduce the number of illegal immigrants. Because I can't see any way that it wouldn't.

Trampolines.

I suppose anything will fly if you throw it hard enough.

They could just loosen the springs...

This would not stop the Flying Burrito Brothers.

How much would this cost? Maybe less than the patrols they do now, I suppose. But it seems like fences are too easy to climb.

You can get a pretty good trampoline for $100, $200 bucks, easy...

ever tried to climb a chain-link hooked to a cattle-prod?

I thought they already had a fence

Let them all in. Then we wouldn't need patrols, fences, or trampoline repellents.

Seems like it would at least reduce the number of illegal immigrants a little, but I wonder if it would be at all cost effective. It'd either have to be a pretty substantial fence to be effective without being constantly guarded, or be a smaller barrier with a constant guard. Either of which would cost a lot of money.

yeah... about this not working: see "Paradise Now"

Posted by: jCave at November 22, 2005 01:33 PM

Not really. As Israel has constructed its security barrier, suicide bombings have decreased. It's basically a 20-ft high concrete wall. You can't exactly sneak under it.

I'm just playing off of their artistic license. I'd like to think you can't just cut a hole in a link-fence and walk through to Tel Aviv.
