They're building a fence along the US-Mexico border.
It's about time.

Posted by: jCave at December 20, 2005 7:05 AMErecting fences is usually the best way to deal with problems. It almost always makes them go away.

Posted by: ryan at December 20, 2005 5:50 PMTake it easy, man. I don't actually think you're a racist, but I do find the fence idea to be rather distasteful and shortsighted. Making legal immigration more feasible for lower class Mexicans and Central Americans who want to come here would probably be a better start to reducing the number of border crossing deaths (as if that's really the House's concern). And the demand for illegal drugs in the U.S. will continue to be met whether or not some desert trafficking routes are cut off.
Having grown up in California, I’m well aware of the many unavoidable detriments associated with a large influx of people into a region, but I don’t see why someone from the East Coast should have more of a right to come here than someone who lives 30 miles away and has family here.
I'm all in favor of making legal immigration exceptionally easy. Throw open the boarders and let anyone get a job who wants to. Great.
I'm also in favor of making illegal immigration as hard as possible. Build fences. Build walls. Increase ICE funding. We've got rampant environmental and property destruction all along the US-Mexico caused by illegal aliens streaming across the border as if it were their right to do so. It isn't. Let's enforce the laws we've got on the books.
