Just because you can put two locations into GoogleMaps and ask for directions doesn't mean you're going to get a rational response. Conclusion: the GM API has no idea how to deal with oceans. But don't worry: it's only a 5,572km swim.

This just proves that google maps ALWAYS give you the longest route ever. I mean, driving down the coast and swimming from Boston?? Mapquest would have had you just start swimming from Newfoundland. So much closer to London.

I share the intuition that this is GoogleHumor. An explicit instruction to swim is not a relevant command for a mapping program.

Especially since they assume you will resume driving on the other side. Assuming you *get* to the other side. While google maps does a good job of alerting travelers to potential tolls, they are significantly silent regarding the possibility of sharks and other Atlantic perils.
